Fashion and Design was started in the institute the mid 80s by Sr. Maria Jose, there was an old building which had to be demolished to give room to what we have today.
The Sisters of Charity (OLC) were prompted to open a technical school for young women following the question which arose, after Primary School, what next?
The department offers the following units:-
- Pattern Drafting
- Trade Theory
- Practical’s
- Home Economics
- Communication Skills
- Business Education Life skills
The trade theory and practical range from dress making, tailoring preliminaries, African kitenges traditional costumes and modern bridal wear. The trade is examinable by the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT).

The core objectives of the department is to empower young men and women with professional skills for life. The department has realized many achievements e.g. a well equipped production unit, fashion shows, exchange programmes with the neighborhood institutions just to mention but a few.
The future plan of the department is to introduce clothing and textile both craft and diploma levels.
The department has also become a consultant unit for events and bridal extravaganza.
We are set for a collaboration with the citizen media where the students will join the famous wedding show along with their catalogue.
